Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.

The modern American version of Mother’s Day has its origins in the early 20th century. It was first celebrated in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna’s mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.

Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.” In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.

Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother’s Day, she became resentful of the commercialization of the holiday. By the early 1920s, Hallmark and other companies had started selling Mother’s Day cards. Jarvis believed that the companies had misinterpreted and exploited the idea of Mother’s Day and that the emphasis of the holiday was on sentiment, not profit. As a result, she organized boycotts of Mother’s Day and threatened to issue lawsuits against the companies involved.

Despite Jarvis’s concerns, Mother’s Day has flourished in the United States and around the world. It has become a day to celebrate and give thanks to mothers through various means, including gifts, cards, flowers, and family gatherings.

In Pakistan, Mother’s Day is celebrated as a day to honor and appreciate mothers for their unconditional love and sacrifices. People celebrate by expressing their gratitude and affection through various means, such as:

  1. Sending Cards and Gifts: Many people purchase greeting cards, flowers, chocolates, or other gifts to give to their mothers as tokens of appreciation.
  2. Family Gatherings: Families often come together to celebrate Mother’s Day with special meals or gatherings. It’s a time for family members to spend quality time with their mothers and create lasting memories.
  3. Social Media Tributes: Many people take to social media to share heartfelt messages, photos, or videos dedicated to their mothers. It’s a way to publicly express love and appreciation for their mothers.
  4. Acts of Service: Some people choose to pamper their mothers by cooking her favorite meal, taking her out for a day of relaxation, or helping with household chores to give her a break.
  5. Charity and Community Service: In addition to honoring their own mothers, some people also use Mother’s Day as an opportunity to support and uplift mothers in need by donating to charities or participating in community service activities.

Overall, Mother’s Day in Pakistan is a time to celebrate the invaluable role of mothers and to show them love and appreciation in various ways.
