What is the link between Netflix’s “Heeramandi” and Umera Ahmed’s “Peer-e-Kamil”?

“Heeramandi” is the latest Netflix series that is gaining popularity in India and Pakistan. Directed by renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the series is set in Lahore before Independence. “Heeramandi” was a passion project for the director, and after several years and multiple cast changes, it was finally released in its current form. Initially, Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, and Imran Abbas were also slated to join the cast. The series has now been released and is receiving mixed reviews.

On the other hand, “Peer-e-Kamil” is a highly successful Urdu novel penned by Umera Ahmed. Regarded as a cult classic, the novel was subsequently translated into English. The main character, Salar Sikandar, is idolized by millions and holds more fame on his own than many other heroes combined.

“Peer-e-Kamil” has intersected with “Heeramandi” as the novel was showcased in a scene of the series. However, a discrepancy arose as “Peer-e-Kamil” was written in 2004, whereas the series is set in the pre-independence era.
